What to know

Whale watching depends on the herring drawing orcas and humpbacks into the fjords north of Tromso, usually from late October to mid-January, so trips last 7 to 9 hours. Rodne's large catamaran sails daily from 23 October to 31 January for NOK 2095 per adult and NOK 1050 for children aged 4 to 15, with under-4s free and NOK 2370 over Christmas. Food is extra, but you get a free second trip if you see no whales. Brim Explorer's quiet hybrid-electric ship costs NOK 1990 and has been sailing since 1 October. Polar Adventures charges NOK 2500 including lunch and a thermal suit. Fast RIB safaris from Skjervoy with Arctic Explorers cost from NOK 3500 with transfer, or NOK 2900 if you drive there yourself. Sightings are never guaranteed.
