What to know

Dog sledding on snow around Longyearbyen runs from November to the end of May, and several kennels compete. Green Dog Svalbard's half-day trip in Bolterdalen, offered from January to May, costs NOK 2690 and includes hotel transfer, an expedition suit, boots and mittens, about an hour and a half on the sled in pairs, waffles and a visit to the puppies. It has a minimum age of 12 and no child rate. Svalbard Husky charges from NOK 2350 for polar-night sledding from 1 November and for spring trips from mid-February. There is no snow at the moment, so kennels run wheeled dog-cart tours until October from about NOK 1790. Svalbard has no VAT, and every group goes with an armed guide because of polar bears.
