What to know

Hiking Besseggen is free, with no permit or entry fee. What most walkers pay for is the Gjende boat, run by Gjendebaten AS, from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, where the classic route starts before the ridge walk back to Gjendesheim. A single costs NOK 260 for adults and NOK 130 for children, and children under 5 travel free. The 2026 season ran from 6 June to 19 September, with daily sailings until 13 September, so the boat is not running now and the hike is best left until next summer, once snow and ice have cleared. Book ahead for July and August, when boats fill up. The full walk takes six to eight hours and is exposed in places.

When to go

The planner warns of freezing in January, February, December. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.

Short days. Jotunheimen & the high mountains gives under 6 hours of daylight in December.
