What to know
The hill where Buddhism arrived on the island in 247 BC, reached by 1,840 granite steps. The cradle of Sinhalese Buddhism and still a pilgrimage. Free: it is a working pilgrimage site with no gate. The small archaeological museum at the foot of the hill is a separate ticket. Poson Poya in June is extraordinary and impossibly crowded.
