What to know

The Whitsundays reef is reached only by boat, and Cruise Whitsundays runs the sole pontoon, Reefworld, moored 39 nautical miles out at Hardy Reef. The full day adventure starts at A$295 for adults, A$269 for seniors, A$145 for children aged 4 to 14 and A$809 for a family of four, with infants under 4 free but no meal provided. That buys four hours at the reef, snorkel gear including stinger suits, an underwater observatory, a semi-submarine tour and three meals. The A$8.50 Environmental Management Charge is already inside the fare, but pricing is dynamic and can climb to around A$329 in peak season, and a card surcharge near 1.42 per cent is added at checkout. Boats leave Port of Airlie, Daydream Island and Hamilton Island daily.

When to go

The planner warns of wet in January, February, March. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.
